The AMC Gremlin often lands on lists of awful cars, but a closer look at its history reveals a different story. Despite its unconventional design, derived from the Hornet and featuring basic components, the Gremlin gained popularity in the early 1970s. In an era dominated by larger American cars, the Gremlin's compact size, fuel efficiency, and affordability appealed to buyers. Its sales success, particularly during the OPEC oil embargo, showcased its practicality and reliability. While critics may have deemed it subpar, the Gremlin proved to be a suitable choice for a changing market, ultimately becoming one of AMC's best-selling cars.
