Brief history of Barton Hall

This Tudor-style mansion was built in the 1830s and transformed into a holiday centre in the late-1940s. It was acquired by Fred Pontin in 1957 and later extended and rebuilt with new chalet blocks, some of which adjoined the main house. Was a little more expensive than other Pontin sites and had a 'posh' reputation.

It was personally managed for several years by Fred Pontin's sister Elsie Brown. The first dry ski slope in the country opened here in 1964 and still survives today. In later years it catered for adults only. It was sold in 1999 is now a PGL children's activity centre and looks remarkably unchanged.
